According to Jacques Lacan, béance is a fissure, a structural opening that runs through the human subject and prevents them from attaining a definitive state of completeness. It is linked to manque-à-être — the “lack-of-being” — the distance that generates desire and continually propels us towards something we imagine might fill it. Yet every time we attain what we desire, the lack reopens and desire shifts elsewhere. The project is divided into two wall-mounted elements. The first consists of a series of paper strips torn at the ends, with their fragments lying on the floor. The second is composed of braided paper cords to which additional pieces can be added, progressively modifying and expanding their structure.
